Origins of Confirmation
The New Testament shows how the whole life and mission of Jesus was lived out with the presence of the Holy Spirit. At his Baptism the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a sign of his anointing as the Messiah. Later Jesus promised his disciples he would send the Holy Spirit to help them hear witness to their faith (LK 4:17-21). This promise was fulfilled on Easter Sunday (JN 20:22) on the feast of Pentecost (ACTS 2:1-4). The apostles used the laying on of hands as a means of imparting the gift of the Holy Spirit to people being Baptised. This laying on of hands is recognized as the beginning of the sacrament of Confirmation (Diocese of Oakland, 2012).
